\”Then Will Your Light Shine Forth\” is based upon selections from Isaiah 58.  The idea was to create a song with a prophetic edge that would still be fun to sing.

The first verse of the song is based on 58, verse 3:

“Why do we fast, but you do not see?
Why humble ourselves, but you do not notice?”
Look, you serve your own interest on your fast day,
and oppress all your workers.

The second verse of the song is based on 58, verse 7:

Is it not to share your bread with the hungry,
and bring the homeless poor into your house;
when you see the naked, to cover them,
and not to hide yourself from your own kin?

The refrain is from verse 10, and the bridge is from verse 12.
